Police Dog Training

Police dog training is a highly specialized field not only because the police dogs are protecting and serving the public interest but also because of the evolution of technology and its application in day to day police work. Police dogs are used for a variety of tasks and not all dogs are trained for all tasks. K9 dogs are used for tracking suspects or victims, sniffing for drugs and bombs, and others are trained to detect accelerants in arson investigations.

The dog handlers are normally police officers. The spend 24 hours a day with their dog and an addtional 8 hours a month in training classes keeping their skills sharp.

The detector K9 police dogs that sniff drugs are usually trained to perform an aggressive alert when they find drugs. This means they can dig or scratch until commanded to stop. Bomb sniffing dogs are trained to give a passive alert such as to sit when they detect a bomb.
